[1, 2]
Akshay Kumar himself took to social media to share the captivating first look, accompanying it with a playful caption that heightened the intrigue: “Dus ko denge das-tak, intezar karo tab tak… Let the fun begin! #BhoothBangla in cinemas on 10th April 2026.” [1] The post, punctuated by a ghost emoji, immediately signaled a return to the spooky yet comedic elements that fans adore. The poster itself is a visual treat, showcasing Kumar seated on an elaborate, eerie throne. The throne is intricately adorned with demon faces, some appearing to open and close, while others are carved into the armrests. [1] Akshay Kumar, exuding a mystical, horror-comedy vibe, is seen wearing multiple malas. [1] This striking imagery, as described by various sources, "leans into an intense horror aesthetic, laced with full-on comedy!" The visual instantly resonates with the dark yet humorous undertones that defined "Bhool Bhulaiyaa," a film that cemented Kumar's versatility in the genre.
One of the most exciting aspects of "Bhoot Bangla" is the reunion of Akshay Kumar with acclaimed director Priyadarshan. This film marks their collaboration after a significant gap of 14 to 16 years, a partnership that has historically delivered some of Bollywood's most cherished comedy classics. [1, 2]
Their previous ventures together, including Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag, De Dana Dan, and Khatta Meetha, are etched into the memories of Bollywood aficionados for their unique blend of humor, strong storytelling, and memorable characters. The news of their reunion alone has generated immense excitement, with fans eagerly anticipating the return of their signature style and comedic brilliance. [4, 3]
The moment the first look of "Bhoot Bangla" surfaced, the internet erupted with comparisons to 2007's blockbuster, "Bhool Bhulaiyaa." Fans were quick to point out that Akshay Kumar in "Bhoot Bangla" seems to channel "major Dr. Aditya Shrivastav energy," reigniting the magic of his quirky psychiatrist role. "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" was a cinematic phenomenon, lauded for its innovative blend of horror, comedy, and psychological suspense.
Directed by Priyadarshan, "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" saw Akshay Kumar's character, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, navigate a haunted ancestral mansion, trying to debunk supernatural claims while uncovering deeper psychological truths. [8] The film was celebrated for its ability to weave humor into tense situations without undermining the plot's gravity, a hallmark of Priyadarshan's directorial style. [8] The enduring appeal of "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" lies in its compelling narrative, the unforgettable portrayal of Manjulika, and the perfect comedic timing of its cast, especially Akshay Kumar.
It's this legacy that makes the comparisons to "Bhoot Bangla" so potent. While T-Series, the owners of the "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" franchise, has clarified that "Bhoot Bangla" is an entirely separate project with no connection to "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2" or the franchise's storyline or script, the stylistic and thematic similarities in the first look are undeniable. The public's desire to see Akshay Kumar return to a similar genre, especially under Priyadarshan's direction, speaks volumes about the lasting impact of their previous work. [1, 2]

Some of these faces appear to be in motion, opening and closing, while others are carved deeply into the armrests, creating an unsettling yet intriguing aesthetic. [1, 3] Industry experts and fans alike have noted that the visual, which “leans into an intense horror aesthetic, laced with full-on comedy,” [3] brilliantly encapsulates the dark yet humorous undertones reminiscent of Bhool Bhulaiyaa – a film that solidified Kumar's versatility in this challenging genre. [2, 3]
Beyond the intriguing first look, another major reason for the immense anticipation surrounding Bhoot Bangla is the reunion of Akshay Kumar with the highly acclaimed director Priyadarshan. This film marks their collaborative return after a significant hiatus of 14 to 16 years, a partnership that has consistently delivered some of Bollywood’s most cherished and enduring comedy classics. The moment the first look of Bhoot Bangla was unveiled, the internet was instantly flooded with fervent comparisons to the 2007 psychological horror-comedy magnum opus, Bhool Bhulaiyaa. [1, 2] Fans were quick to draw parallels, noting that Akshay Kumar in Bhoot Bangla seems to channel “major Dr. Aditya Shrivastav energy,” [2] instantly reigniting the magic of his iconic, quirky psychiatrist role. Bhool Bhulaiyaa, also directed by Priyadarshan, was a cinematic phenomenon that redefined the horror-comedy genre in India, earning critical acclaim and immense commercial success. [8, 9]
Bhool Bhulaiyaa saw Akshay Kumar’s character, Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, a seemingly eccentric but brilliant psychiatrist, delve into the mysteries of a haunted ancestral mansion. His mission was to debunk the supernatural claims plaguing the family, only to uncover deeper psychological complexities. [8] The film was lauded for its masterful ability to intricately weave humor into genuinely tense and terrifying situations without ever compromising the gravity of its plot – a distinctive characteristic of Priyadarshan's directorial prowess. [8] The enduring appeal of Bhool Bhulaiyaa stems from its compelling and suspenseful narrative, the unforgettable and chilling portrayal of Manjulika, and the impeccable comedic timing exhibited by its entire cast, particularly Akshay Kumar. [10, 8]
It is this powerful legacy that makes the comparisons between Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Bhoot Bangla not just inevitable, but also a testament to the profound impact of their earlier collaboration. It's crucial to note that while fan sentiment leans heavily towards a spiritual successor, T-Series, the rightful owners of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise, has explicitly clarified that Bhoot Bangla is an entirely independent project. They have stated unequivocally that there is no connection to Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 or any other installment of the franchise in terms of storyline, script, or underlying rights. [11, 12] Despite earlier rumors suggesting Bhoot Bangla was initially conceived as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, these claims have been firmly refuted by T-Series. [11, 12] Nevertheless, the stylistic and thematic similarities evident in the first look of Bhoot Bangla have undoubtedly tapped into the audience's deep-seated desire to witness Akshay Kumar return to this beloved genre, especially under the seasoned guidance of Priyadarshan. [1, 2]
The horror-comedy genre has experienced a significant renaissance in Indian cinema over the past few years, evolving into a new, highly popular cinematic obsession for audiences across the nation. [9, 15] Recent successes like Stree 2 and Munjya have unequivocally demonstrated that a well-executed blend of genuine scares and hearty laughter can be an incredibly potent and consistently winning formula at the box office. [15] This genre provides filmmakers with a unique and versatile canvas to explore a wide array of themes and ideas, often employing humor as a clever mechanism to defuse deep-seated fears and to safely, yet incisively, critique societal norms and superstitions. [15]
Bhoot Bangla arrives at a particularly opportune moment, with the audience not just ready but actively seeking out such exhilarating entertainment. The film, according to early buzz, promises to be a "complete entertainer packed with comedy, chaotic fun, and emotional moments."
