The glitz, the glamour, the unforgettable speeches – awards season is officially in full swing for 2026, and it's already shaping up to be a year of exciting revelations and fierce competition. With the Critics Choice Awards having just set the stage and the Golden Globes on the horizon, we're here to decode the early highlights, surprising wins, and the films and television shows poised to dominate the rest of the season.
Kicking off the televised awards calendar, the 31st Critics Choice Awards (CCA) were held on January 4, 2026, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Comedian Chelsea Handler returned for her fourth consecutive year as host, bringing her signature wit to the proceedings. This year's ceremony also marked the introduction of four new categories: Best Variety Series, Best Stunt Design, Best Casting and Ensemble, and Best Sound, reflecting the evolving landscape of cinematic and television achievement.
The night saw a powerful assertion from critics, with several films cementing their status as strong contenders. Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another emerged as a major victor, clinching the coveted Best Picture award. Anderson himself was recognized for his directorial prowess, taking home the award for Best Director for the same film.
Individual acting honors were equally compelling:
Sinners also had a remarkable evening, securing Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, and picking up additional trophies for Best Young Actor/Actress (Miles Caton), Best Musical Score, and the inaugural Best Casting and Ensemble award. Netflix's Frankenstein was lauded for its technical achievements, winning for Best Costume Design, Best Hair & Makeup, and Best Production Design. In the animated categories, K-Pop Demon Hunters proved a hit, taking home Best Animated Feature and Best Song for 'Golden'.
While the film awards often grab headlines, the Critics Choice Awards also shine a significant light on outstanding television. Though specific TV winners from the Critics Choice Awards weren't detailed in the immediate search results in the same depth as film, the nominations hinted at strong performances from shows like Adolescence, The White Lotus, Severance, Abbott Elementary, and The Bear across various categories. The inclusion of new categories like Best Variety Series further underscores the CCA's commitment to recognizing diverse forms of televised excellence.
Following swiftly on the heels of the Critics Choice Awards, the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards are scheduled to air live on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Comedian Nikki Glaser returns to host for her second consecutive year, promising another evening of sharp humor and celebrity interactions. The ceremony will be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, making it accessible to a wide audience.
This year's Golden Globes are making history with the introduction of a new Best Podcast category, acknowledging the growing influence and artistry within the audio storytelling space. Nominees for this inaugural award include popular shows like "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard," "Call Her Daddy," "Good Hang with Amy Poehler," "The Mel Robbins Podcast," "SmartLess," and "Up First from NPR."
Before the main event, a special 'Golden Eve' presentation on January 8, 2026, honored two legends with Lifetime Achievement Awards: Helen Mirren received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Sarah Jessica Parker was presented with the Carol Burnett Award.
The nominations, announced on December 8, 2025, have set the stage for intense competition. One Battle After Another leads the film nominations with nine nods, followed closely by Sentimental Value with eight, and Sinners with seven. On the television side, The White Lotus continues its awards season dominance with six nominations for its third season.
Key acting nominees include a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars:
Predictions as of January 10, 2026, suggest a potential split for the top film categories, with Sinners favored for Best Drama and One Battle After Another for Best Comedy or Musical.
The early awards season, spearheaded by the Critics Choice and Golden Globes, provides crucial insights into the broader industry landscape and hints at potential Oscar frontrunners. Critics Choice Awards are often considered a strong indicator of future success at the Academy Awards.
Streaming services continue to be a dominant force, securing numerous nominations and wins across both film and television categories. Platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ are not just competing for subscribers but are also heavily investing in original content to gain critical acclaim and awards recognition. The shift of major awards, like the Oscars, to YouTube streaming in future years further solidifies the digital takeover. There's also a noted industry trend towards creating "urgency" in streaming, with live events, weekly releases, and sports becoming crucial to combat binge-watching habits and encourage immediate viewership.
While specific statistics for the 2026 awards are still being analyzed, the conversation around diversity and inclusion remains a vital part of the awards ecosystem. The recognition of a broad range of stories, performances, and creators from various backgrounds is an ongoing effort within Hollywood. Nominations in different awards, like the Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards and Women and Diversity in Law Awards, highlight the broader push for inclusivity across different sectors, including entertainment.
Beyond the awards themselves, the red carpet sets the tone for fashion trends. At the Critics Choice Awards, a clear trend emerged: romantic, retro hairstyles. Stars like Ariana Grande showcased Regency-era updos, while others embraced bouncy '70s curls. Vintage fashion also continues its reign, with Elle Fanning notably sporting a pale green off-the-shoulder gown from the 1950s at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, signaling Hollywood's enduring love affair with classic styles. Expect to see more molten fabrics and daring silhouettes as the season progresses.
The 2026 awards season is just beginning to unfold its narrative. With the Critics Choice Awards providing an early roadmap and the Golden Globes promising further insights, the race to the Oscars is becoming clearer. Films like One Battle After Another, Sinners, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, and Frankenstein are undeniable forces to be reckoned with, while television series such as The White Lotus and Adolescence are making a strong case for their excellence. The influence of streaming, the continuous push for diversity, and the ever-evolving red-carpet fashion all contribute to a dynamic and engaging awards season.
Stay tuned as we continue to track the nominees, celebrate the winners, and analyze the shifting tides of this exciting year in entertainment!
