Under the leadership of software chief Craig Federighi, Apple has restructured its AI strategy, accelerating plans to revamp Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. This includes a pragmatic approach of integrating third-party AI models, like Google's Gemini, while simultaneously developing its own on-device AI capabilities, particularly for models that can run efficiently on Apple hardware. [10] To support these advanced functionalities, the iPhone 16 lineup features an upgraded neural engine with a greater number of cores. [11]

Market Demand: A Mixed Bag and Evolving Outlook

The initial market reception for the iPhone 16 Pro presented a complex picture. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that initial demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max was "lower than expected," with first-weekend sales for the iPhone 16 Pro estimated to be down by 27% and the Pro Max by 16% compared to their iPhone 15 Pro predecessors. [12, 13] A significant factor cited for this lukewarm initial demand was the delayed availability of crucial Apple Intelligence features, which were not fully operational at the iPhone 16 Pro's launch in September 2024. [12, 15] Many key AI functionalities were slated to roll out with iOS 18.1 in late October 2024 for the U.S. market, with other regions seeing staggered releases well into 2025. [12, 15]

Compounding this, intense competition in key markets, particularly China, where rival brands aggressively pushed innovative alternatives, also played a role in the initial sales figures.

However, the narrative isn't entirely one-sided. Subsequent analyses indicated a more positive trajectory. Morgan Stanley analysts, for instance, raised their iPhone 16 build estimates, signaling stronger-than-expected demand for the Pro and Pro Max models. [16] Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo later adjusted his outlook, suggesting that demand for the iPhone 16 Pro models generally met Apple's expectations and remained robust. [17, 18] Production of the Pro models continued through China's National Day holiday, a strong indicator of sustained demand. [17, 19] While the base iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models experienced softer demand compared to their predecessors, the Pro variants maintained shipment volumes comparable to the iPhone 15 Pro series. [17, 18]

Globally, Apple's overall smartphone performance in 2025 remained dominant, securing a 20% market share and a 10% year-over-year shipment increase, according to Counterpoint Research, with stable iPhone 16 demand contributing in emerging economies.
