The American Nightmare Rises: Cody Rhodes Dethrones Drew McIntyre as Undisputed WWE Champion on SmackDown

A New Era Dawns: Cody Rhodes Captures the Undisputed WWE Championship

The pro wrestling world is buzzing, and for good reason. Friday, March 6, 2026, will forever be etched in the memories of the WWE Universe as the night Cody Rhodes, 'The American Nightmare,' finally accomplished what many believed was his destiny, once again. In a thrilling, chaotic, and ultimately triumphant main event on WWE SmackDown emanating live from the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, Rhodes defeated the formidable 'Scottish Warrior,' Drew McIntyre, to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion. [1, 2]

This wasn't just another title change; it was a defining moment, a culmination of months of intense rivalry, and a dramatic twist on the 'Road to WrestleMania 42' that has left fans both elated and eager for what comes next.

The Epic Showdown in Portland: A Match for the Ages

The atmosphere inside the Moda Center was electric, thick with anticipation for the Undisputed WWE Championship clash. Drew McIntyre, known for his aggressive style and unyielding power, stepped into the ring as the defending champion, having held the prestigious title for 55 days. [6] His reign, though relatively brief, had been marked by a relentless intensity and a growing antagonism towards Cody Rhodes.

From the opening bell, it was clear this wasn't going to be a clean fight. The history between these two superstars, fueled by McIntyre's constant interference in Rhodes' attempts to earn a title shot and their brutal 'Three Stages of Hell' match in January, ensured a deeply personal and physically punishing encounter. [7, 8] The match quickly spilled out of the ring and into the crowd, showcasing the animosity that had been brewing for months. [4]

As the battle raged, the stakes escalated. Tables were introduced and subsequently broken, and in a moment of sheer desperation, McIntyre even knocked out two referees – one accidentally by Rhodes, but the second purposefully in a fit of frustration. [1, 3] This act underscored McIntyre's ruthless determination to retain his championship by any means necessary.

Then came the pivotal moment that will be replayed for years to come. As McIntyre seized a steel chair, seemingly intent on using it to put an end to Rhodes' championship aspirations, a familiar face emerged from the shadows: Jacob Fatu. [1, 3] Fatu's unexpected appearance, pulling the chair away from McIntyre, momentarily stunned the champion and created the opening 'The American Nightmare' needed. Seizing the opportunity, Rhodes quickly delivered a devastating Cody Cutter, followed by his signature Cross Rhodes, securing the pinfall victory and the Undisputed WWE Championship. [1, 3]

Cody Rhodes: The Undisputed Chapter Continues

This victory marks Cody Rhodes' third reign as WWE Champion, a testament to his resilience, talent, and unwavering commitment to his self-proclaimed mission to 'finish the story.' Rhodes' journey has been one of the most compelling narratives in modern professional wrestling. After leaving WWE in 2016 and co-founding All Elite Wrestling (AEW), his triumphant return in 2022 was met with widespread acclaim. His initial quest culminated at WrestleMania 40, where he famously ended Roman Reigns' historic 1,316-day reign as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, a moment that sent the wrestling world into a frenzy. [12, 11]

Since then, Rhodes has continued to solidify his position as a top-tier superstar, captivating audiences with his passion and in-ring prowess. His subsequent accomplishments, including winning the 2023 and 2024 Royal Rumble matches, the inaugural WWE Crown Jewel Championship in 2024, and the King of the Ring tournament in 2025, further cemented his legacy. [11] Now, as a three-time WWE Champion, he enters WrestleMania 42 with the gold firmly around his waist, poised for another monumental challenge.

Drew McIntyre's Reign: A Fierce, Undefeated Spirit

While the night ended in disappointment for Drew McIntyre, his 55-day reign as Undisputed WWE Champion was a period of intense competition and a demonstration of his continued evolution as a top heel. McIntyre had captured the title from Rhodes in a brutal 'Three Stages of Hell' match in January, a victory that, ironically, also involved interference from Jacob Fatu. [8, 5] Throughout his tenure, 'The Scottish Warrior' embraced a more aggressive, cynical persona, often taking to social media to express his grievances and solidify his antagonist role, much to the chagrin of the WWE Universe.

McIntyre is a seasoned veteran with a decorated career. He is a five-time World Champion across major promotions, including three reigns with the Undisputed WWE Championship, one World Heavyweight Championship reign in WWE, and a TNA World Heavyweight Championship. [6] His first WWE Championship victory at WrestleMania 36, pinning Brock Lesnar, remains a career highlight. [13] He has also added accolades like the 2020 Men's Royal Rumble and 2024 Mr. Money in the Bank to his impressive resume. [6] His performance against Rhodes, even in defeat, showcased his continued dominance and unwavering commitment to his craft.

The Road Ahead: WrestleMania 42 and Beyond

With Cody Rhodes now firmly established as the Undisputed WWE Champion, the 'Road to WrestleMania 42' takes a thrilling turn. The implications of this title change are immediate and profound. Randy Orton, having emerged victorious from the men's Elimination Chamber match, has already been confirmed to main event WrestleMania 42 for the Undisputed WWE Championship. [7, 8] This means that fans can now anticipate a highly anticipated showdown between 'The American Nightmare' and 'The Viper' on the grandest stage of them all. [8, 5]

The rivalry between Rhodes and Orton is well-documented, stemming from their shared past and recent clashes. This championship match promises to be a deeply personal and explosive encounter, potentially defining the landscape of WWE for the foreseeable future.
