US-Iran War Escalates: A Day of Intense Conflict as Missiles Hit Israel, US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship

A Day of Unprecedented Escalation: US-Iran Conflict Widens on March 5, 2026

Today, March 5, 2026, the protracted conflict between the United States and Iran witnessed a significant and alarming escalation, with Iranian missiles striking Israeli territory and a US submarine reportedly sinking an Iranian warship in international waters. This marks the sixth day of a rapidly expanding war that is reverberating across the Middle East and beyond, sending shockwaves through global political and economic landscapes. [1, 2]

Iranian Missiles Barrage Israel, Triggering Alarms

Early Thursday morning, Iran launched a fresh wave of missiles towards Israeli cities, triggering air raid sirens and sending millions of residents scrambling into bomb shelters. The Israeli military confirmed identifying missiles launched from Iran towards its territory and reported that defensive systems were operating to intercept the threat. [5] Explosions were reportedly heard in Jerusalem, and alerts were triggered in several areas, including Tel Aviv. [1, 5] While there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant impact from these strikes, the repeated assaults underscore the direct and severe nature of the ongoing hostilities. [1, 5]

Israel's military, in response, announced a new widespread wave of attacks in Tehran, targeting a military compound containing the headquarters of all Iran's security organizations, including the Revolutionary Guard and intelligence division. Israeli forces claim to have successfully struck Tehran's missile production sites and launchers. [7]

US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship: A 'Quiet Death' in the Indian Ocean

Perhaps the most dramatic development of the day was the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that an American submarine torpedoed the Iranian warship, calling it a "quiet death" and noting it was the first sinking of an enemy ship by a US torpedo since World War II.

The IRIS Dena, a Moudge-class frigate commissioned in 2021 and armed with anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, and a 76mm naval gun, was reportedly in international waters, returning from a friendly visit to India and participation in naval exercises when it was struck. Sri Lankan authorities confirmed the distress call and subsequent sinking, initiating rescue operations. [8, 10] Tragically, the attack resulted in a significant loss of life, with Sri Lankan officials reporting at least 87 bodies recovered and 32 sailors rescued, many wounded, leaving over 100 crew members missing. [8, 9]

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi decried the incident as "an atrocity at sea," stating that America "will come to bitterly regret (the) precedent it has set."

Regional Conflict Widens on Multiple Fronts

The conflict's expansion is not limited to direct US-Iran and Iran-Israel engagements; it has metastasized across the broader Middle East and beyond:

• Lebanon: Israel launched fresh strikes on Beirut, targeting Hezbollah command centers. Lebanese state media reported an Israeli drone strike killed a Hamas official in a Palestinian refugee camp in Tripoli, along with at least eight casualties in Lebanon. [1, 2]
• Iraq: Iran conducted strikes against ethnic fighters in northern Iraq's autonomous Kurdish area, contributing to widespread chaos that plunged parts of Iraq into a nationwide blackout.
• Strait of Hormuz: The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced they had taken "complete control" of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which a quarter of the world's crude oil flows. This assertion has led to a drastic 90 percent plunge in oil tanker transits through the strait, causing significant disruption to global energy markets. [8, 2]
• Turkey/NATO: In a concerning development, a missile launched from Iran towards Turkey's airspace was intercepted and destroyed by NATO's air defense system. While a Turkish official later clarified the missile was not aimed at Turkey but at a British base in Cyprus and veered off course, the incident drew condemnation from Ankara and NATO, highlighting the risk of the conflict ensnaring new actors. [8, 12]
• Saudi Arabia: Saudi defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed three cruise missiles outside Al-Kharj city, southeast of the capital, along with earlier interceptions of nine drones and two cruise missiles.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Reactions

The human cost of this escalating conflict is dire. The Red Crescent Society of Iran reported that US-Israeli airstrikes have hit 174 cities in Iran, with over 1,000 military personnel and civilians killed and more than 6,000 wounded across 636 locations. [8, 2] Residential areas, seven Red Crescent bases, and several medical centers have been damaged. [2] In Israel, 11 people have died, and six US troops have also been killed in the conflict. [6, 11]

Internationally, there are growing calls for de-escalation. UN human rights experts have condemned the unlawful military attacks by the US and Israel against Iran, citing violations of the UN Charter and international law. [5, 7] They urged an immediate halt to the conflict and emphasized the need for all parties to comply with international humanitarian law to protect civilians. [7]

Political Stances and Future Outlook

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US is "accelerating, not decelerating" its war on Iran, with more assets heading to the region, and emphasized that the US is "fighting to win." President Donald Trump praised the US military for "doing very well on the war front." The US Senate, largely along party lines, voted down a resolution seeking to halt the American air campaign and require congressional authorization for military action, effectively preserving the administration's authority to continue operations. [1, 9]

Meanwhile, Iran has warned of the destruction of military and economic infrastructure across the Middle East. The postponement of the funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei underscores the gravity of the situation within Iran. [9, 6]

The rapid intensification and geographical spread of this conflict, involving direct attacks on sovereign nations and critical international waterways, raise profound concerns about regional stability and global security. The ripple effects are already being felt in financial markets, with oil prices resuming their ascent, and disruptions to air travel impacting thousands. [2] The international community faces an urgent challenge to de-escalate a conflict that threatens to spiral into a wider regional, if not global, catastrophe.
